San Jose police have arrested a man suspected of keyring a white Tesla vehicle in a Costco parking lot. The suspect was charged with a felony in a case captured on Tesla's camera system.
San Francisco Chronicle Report The San Jose Police Department announced Monday that they had taken into custody of an individual they say they are responsible for destroying Tesla in a Costco parking lot. The incident, which happened Friday, was filmed on video and quickly spread across social media platforms, sparking anger and debate. Police have not made the suspect's name public.
In the video, clearly recorded by Tesla's own camera system, you can see a man in a “American” jacket leaving his car and scratching the lock along the white Tesla's passenger side door. Vandalism has been widely condemned, with many speculating about the motives behind the crime.
San Jose Police Chief Paul Joseph addressed the incident in a statement, highlighting the seriousness of the crime and its consequences. “This meaningless crime and subsequent consequences should serve as clear reminders. They do not justify illegal activities, regardless of personal beliefs or frustration. I encourage each other to respect each other and above all respect the law,” Joseph said. The suspect is charged with felony vandalism.
The incident took place amid the backdrop of protests and domestic terrorism over Tesla CEO Elon Musk's involvement in the federal government and his close ties with President Donald Trump. Musk's political and government work has attracted both praise and criticism, with some Tesla owners expressing regret over the purchase as they reluctantly relate to mask and his brand. This led to an arson attack targeting the Tesla facility.
San Jose Mayor Matt Mahan also placed great emphasis on the incident, questioning the logic behind the politically motivated vandalism. “If we key in the car and the person who designed it doesn't like the time it shows, we don't like the time it shows, so if this crime is politically motivated, our residents can't be held responsible for being 3,000 miles away,” Mahan said in a statement.
As the investigation continues, the identity of the individual arrested has not been announced by authorities.
