Police bodycam footage reveals man attacking officer with a knife in Santa Monica

A police incident in California turned deadly when an unrelated man armed with a knife confronted an officer in a busy seaside park. This was captured in newly released bodycam footage. The events took place on August 22, as Santa Monica police responded to reports of a man chasing a woman near the Broadway stairs, according to a critical incident briefing.

The deceased man was identified as 44-year-old Michael Rodriguez by the Los Angeles County Department of Medical Examiner.

As officers arrived around 12:30 p.m., they began conversing with witnesses in Palisades Park, filled with pedestrians and vendors that Saturday afternoon. While addressing the original report, the officers spotted Rodriguez, who was holding a large knife over his head and advancing toward them and several bystanders, with no connection to the initial call.

“Hey, put that down,” an officer can be heard shouting repeatedly as he draws his weapon and retreats away from Rodriguez. Despite commands to drop the knife, Rodriguez continued to approach with the weapon raised, picking up speed as he moved closer.

Eventually, one officer fired a single shot, striking Rodriguez in the chest. Following the shot, bodycam footage shows him collapsing to the ground, the knife slipping from his grasp. The officers called for backup and requested medical assistance immediately.

As they checked Rodriguez for additional weapons, officers discovered a second knife in his pants pocket and noticed a third knife’s handle sticking out of his backpack. The knife used during the encounter was described as a sizeable, fixed-blade weapon designed for both fighting and utility purposes.

Medical personnel arrived and took over care, but Rodriguez was later pronounced dead at the emergency room approximately an hour and a half after the shooting. The medical examiner confirmed his death was due to a gunshot wound to the chest and ruled it a homicide. The overall investigation remains open.

No injuries were reported among officers or bystanders during this tense incident. Santa Monica Police Chief Darrick Jacob expressed condolences for the loss of life, emphasizing the challenging circumstances officers face daily and the importance of transparency in such situations. The police department has stated that the shooting is under criminal investigation, with a separate review of the officer’s use of force being conducted by the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office. Authorities have also noted that the released bodycam footage is based on preliminary evidence and does not conclude the investigation process.
