Seattle Police Chief Under Fire for Absence During Mass Shooting

The police chief of Seattle, Shon Barnes, is facing significant backlash for being out of town during a mass shooting that occurred at the Bite of Seattle food festival on Sunday night, resulting in three fatalities and multiple injuries. This incident has sparked renewed scrutiny regarding his commitment to the community, particularly as he has been away from his family in Chicago.

The shooting unfolded at the city’s annual food event, with up to three gunmen exchanging fire and inadvertently endangering innocent bystanders. While the chaos unfolded, Chief Barnes was in Dallas, Texas, attending a conference hosted by the National Organization of Black Law Enforcement Executives.

In response to criticism about his absence, Barnes expressed frustration, saying, “I wish I had a crystal ball and could plan an act of gun violence, but I can’t.” It seems he was also defensive when questioned about how often he is present in Seattle, as a report had indicated that he spends most weekends away from the city.

“That report is wrong, do you understand?” he retorted, as staff nudged him to leave the questioning.

He insisted on his dedication to the city, stating, “I’ve worked hard for this city since the day I got here, you know?” But when pressed about his time spent in Chicago, he admitted, “Certainly, I don’t travel as often as I’d like.” He dismissed claims that he is absent every weekend, insisting that such perceptions are exaggerated and untrue.

Seattle police believe the shooting stemmed from a dispute among a small group, leading to the teenager who allegedly fired shots into the crowd. “The details are still being investigated,” Seattle Mayor Katie Wilson stated.
