Celebrations Turn Chaotic After Knicks NBA Championship Win
New York Police Department Commissioner Jessica Tisch expressed appreciation on Sunday for the hard work of officers who maintained public order amidst celebrations following the Knicks’ NBA championship victory. Unfortunately, some fans marred the festivities with violence.
The post-game chaos, though limited, led to 63 arrests, one shooting, four stabbings, and injuries to ten police officers.
Tisch remarked that officers had a “long, grueling night” as victory celebrations erupted throughout New York City. There were also reports of violence involving Spurs fans and the burning of a school bus near Times Square.
“As celebrations unfolded across the city, you responded wherever needed, maintaining order, keeping people safe, and doing everything possible to keep the celebrations as celebratory as possible, rather than violent,” Tisch noted in her message to NYPD officials. “You did it bravely.”
She highlighted the diverse roles officers played, whether standing guard outside Madison Square Garden, overseeing anti-looting details in commercial areas, or responding to radio calls. “By addressing the public order response and handling various challenging tasks, we have managed to cope with one of the most high-profile periods this city has experienced in years,” she stated.
Tisch mentioned that many officers volunteered to cancel their days off, with some working shifts exceeding 12 hours to support events like Sunday’s Puerto Rico Day parade and FIFA watch party.
Thanks to the efforts of the officers, she indicated that the night’s violence could have escalated further.
Among those arrested, at least 15 suspects now face criminal charges, including a 17-year-old who was shot in the leg and four others who were stabbed, according to New York City police.
With the immediate aftermath addressed, the NYPD is now preparing for a victory parade scheduled for Thursday, Tisch added.
