Police in London Detain Farmers Who Were Peacefully Protesting Against Labor Tax Takeover

On Wednesday morning, British farmers were arrested as thousands gathered in Westminster to protest against the left-leaning Labour government’s planned inheritance tax increase.

Tractors filled central London as farmers voiced their opposition to Chancellor Rachel Reeves’ proposal for a 20% inheritance tax on agricultural land valued over £1 million, set to take effect in April.

Farmers are expressing worry over this change, as many operate on tight budgets and lack cash reserves. There’s a genuine fear that they might have to sell off their land to cover taxes upon their parents’ passing.

Even though protests have remained peaceful, the Metropolitan Police imposed a sudden ban on the demonstration. They cited concerns over potential disruptions to emergency services and local businesses.

Dan Willis, part of the Berkshire Farmers Group and an organizer of the protest, remarked, “The Met chose to cancel at the last minute, but there was no way to halt the protest once the farmers were informed. The frustration was palpable.”

A beef farmer from Newbury shared his thoughts: “Rachel Reeves’ budget last year was a disaster. It completely stunted progress, growth, and any future development. Everything just ground to a halt.”

“If I wanted to invest—like building a new calf shed—once my mother, the farm’s owner, passes away, I’d face taxes on that investment.”

Videos circulating on social media captured moments of farmers being handcuffed and taken into custody. As of now, the police have not disclosed how many arrests occurred.

Reform UK leader Nigel Farage announced his party would cover the legal expenses for farmers arrested during the protest.

Farage stated, “A farmers’ protest planned in Whitehall was abruptly canceled by the police. Now, farmers are in London, and they’re being arrested. This is simply outrageous.”

“Reform UK will offer complete legal support to all farmers who were peacefully protesting today.”

Victoria Atkins, the Conservative shadow environment secretary, added her voice: “Farmers don’t typically protest, but since Rachel Reeves isn’t listening, they felt they had no choice but to raise their concerns in Whitehall regarding family farms and the severe implications of this new tax.”
