Protests Turn Violent in Downtown Los Angeles
The Los Angeles Police Department was compelled to issue a dispersal order after a significant student protest against federal immigration policies escalated into violence in downtown Los Angeles on Wednesday.
According to the LAPD Central Division, around 3:30 p.m. local time, officers began taking a person into custody for throwing an object as a crowd formed around them, leading to disturbances.
Authorities instructed the crowd to disperse, warning that those who did not comply could face arrest.
Violence broke out after hundreds of middle and high school students gathered in downtown to express their opposition. Video footage from affiliate FOX 11 Los Angeles captured students, backpacks in tow, marching through the streets while waving large Mexican flags and signs.
Students blocked multiple lanes of traffic as they moved through the city, causing significant disruption.
Tensions seemed to heighten near the intersection of East Temple Street and North Alameda Street, close to the ICE Los Angeles field office. As a result, at least four individuals were taken into custody on charges of property destruction, and they are expected to face felony charges.
Interestingly, it’s still unclear if the initial suspect was actually a student from the protest or an unrelated participant.
This event is ongoing, and updates will be provided as more information becomes available.
