LONDON – Investigation into Anne Widecombe’s Murder
Authorities announced on Monday that the murder of former British politician Anne Widecombe is now classified as a potential act of terrorism.
The South East Counter Terrorism Police revealed that a 28-year-old man previously arrested on murder charges has been re-arrested for allegedly committing, preparing, or inciting a terrorist act.
Initially, the Devon and Cornwall police claimed that the killing did not appear to be related to terrorism and suggested that there was no evidence of political motivation.
Lawrence Taylor, who leads the National Counter-Terrorism Police, stated, “The emergence of new information and evidence necessitates our counter-terrorism force taking over the investigation.” He added, “We are pursuing several lines of inquiry to understand the motive behind this attack.”
Anne Widecombe, aged 78, was discovered deceased in her remote home in a village in southwest England last week. While police refrained from disclosing the cause of death, they noted that she suffered “serious injuries.”
This incident has sent shockwaves through British political circles. Widecombe had been a notable figure for many years, recognized for her strong character and socially conservative stance, particularly against abortion and the expansion of LGBTQ+ rights.
The individual arrested, who has not been named as no charges have been filed, was taken into custody on Saturday in South Yorkshire, over 200 miles away from where Widecombe was found in Haytor, Dartmoor National Park.
Authorities believe she was attacked around 12:30 PM on Wednesday. Concerns for her safety escalated after she failed to show up for a scheduled television interview that afternoon.
Widecombe served in the House of Commons from 1987 until 2010 and held the position of prisons minister during John Major’s Conservative government in the 1990s.
After leaving politics, she became well-known as a contestant on reality shows like Strictly Come Dancing and Celebrity Big Brother.
She later joined the Brexit Party, serving briefly in the European Parliament until the UK’s exit from the EU in 2020. Recently, she became associated with the anti-immigrant Reform UK Party and has been active in media appearances as a spokesperson.
Friends and colleagues have remarked on the contrast between her fiery political approach and her warm, humorous personal demeanor.
