Police looking into the unexpected death of Jayden Adams following the World Cup

Authorities in South Africa are investigating the unexpected death of Jayden Adams, a 25-year-old football player who represented his country in the recent World Cup.

Adams participated in three of South Africa’s group stage matches last month, and the Football Association announced his passing through the South African Football Players Union (SAFPU) on Saturday.

While the exact cause of death remains unclear, Cape Town police have confirmed they are looking into the circumstances surrounding Adams’ passing.

“Cape Town Central Police have opened an inquiry into the situation following the discovery of a body of a 25-year-old man on Saturday,” a police spokesperson shared with the Associated Press. “The details of this incident are currently under examination.”

Adams’ father, Juanito, mentioned that the family is still trying to arrange funeral specifics.

Juanito told eNCA, a South African news outlet: “As everyone knows, this was a premature death. His family is having a tough time coping.” He added, “Moving on won’t be simple. People say it gets easier, but it really doesn’t. It’s about learning to accept it and live with it.”

Adams had entered the tournament with a heavy heart; he lost his grandmother just a day before South Africa’s match against the Czech Republic.

After the team’s victory over South Korea, which allowed them to move on to the Round of 32, Adams was seen quietly sitting in the corner while his teammates celebrated.

His body was discovered in a residence in Shotche Kloof at 11:06 a.m. local time on Saturday, as reported by a spokesperson from the South African Police Service in the Western Cape.

Adams had a five-year-old daughter with his partner, Aquiella Adendorff.

Adendorff expressed her pride in Adams’ accomplishments on Instagram a few weeks before the tournament: “Seeing you achieve something so significant filled my heart with immense pride.” She continued, “Through the hard work, the sacrifices, the early mornings, the disappointments, the moments when no one was watching, you persevered, you stayed disciplined, you trusted God through it all. And now look at you…representing your country on the national team.”

FIFA President Gianni Infantino also shared his condolences, calling Adams’ passing “incredibly sad.” The SAFPU mourned as well, stating, “South African football has lost a talented player, a devoted servant of the game, and a young life that still had so much to give. May his soul rest in eternal peace.”

Adams did not participate in the national team’s final match, which ended in a 1-0 loss to Canada in the Round of 32.
