Tuchel Reflects on Tough Win Against Norway

In the aftermath of England’s gritty 2-1 victory over Norway in the World Cup quarter-finals, Thomas Tuchel wasn’t holding back in his assessment. During an interview with Gabriel Clarke, Tuchel, who saw his team struggle significantly for much of the match, noted, “It was a very difficult situation for us today. The result is great. It’s great to be in the top four. But I’m not satisfied with the performance.”

He acknowledged that his squad appeared “sloppy” and committed “a lot of technical mistakes.” However, he bristled when Clarke suggested there might be “mental” issues at play, responding, “This is pure mentality. How can you ask questions about mentality now? This is pure mentality. It’s not a question of mentality.” Tuchel seemed genuinely perplexed.

Clarke pressed on, asking whether the technical issues he highlighted were rooted in psychology. Tuchel firmly rebutted, “Mentally I’m fine! This is pure spirituality. We can bottle it and sell it… that’s the quality of our game.”

The manager did commend his substitutes—Reece James, Jed Spence, Morgan Rodgers, and Ebereche Eze—for their contributions but stuck to his guns about the need for improvement.

As for England’s next challenge, they will face Argentina after defeating Switzerland 3-1 in extra time. It’s worth noting that while Jude Bellingham scored again, England didn’t look their best against Norway. The team struggled, particularly in the second half, where Norway rattled the crossbar in the 80th minute.

Compounding their struggles was Declan Rice, who had been ill leading up to the match and was sent off at halftime.

Post-match, Bellingham responded to Tuchel’s criticism. While acknowledging the tough nature of the game, he quipped, “Yeah, whatever. It’s hard out there, it’s a tough shift. All the players have put in very tough shifts.”

Now, England prepares for their fourth World Cup semi-final, aiming for their first trophy since 1966. They’ll face Argentina in Atlanta on Wednesday at 3 p.m.
