Elderly couple found dead in South Carolina home and the police say The heater was measured to be approximately 1,000 degrees.
A Spartanburg police report said the couple's family asked for a welfare check to be performed at their home on Saturday after they had not heard from them since Wednesday.
When police arrived at the Woodview Avenue home around 6 p.m., they said all doors were locked but one window was unsafe. When police removed the window screen and looked inside, they found the couple dead.
Medics escaped through a window and found the house to be “extremely hot.”
Investigators said the man was found lying face up on the bed without any clothes on, while his wife was found slouched in a chair at the foot of the bed.
Police said there was no sign of a struggle or foul play, and firefighters said they found no evidence of carbon monoxide poisoning. When medics attempted to take the couple's body temperature with a device that can measure temperatures up to 106 degrees, they found that both bodies' temperatures exceeded that maximum.
Family members of the couple told police they saw them Wednesday trying to fix a heater pilot light that went out. The woman also said she recently had a hip replacement and the man had a fall.
When emergency personnel went to the basement to check the heater and water heater, one firefighter said, “The heater was so hot it looked like the basement was on fire.”
The temperature of the heater was measured at 1,000 degrees, and the house had to be ventilated because there was a strong odor of natural gas.
