Man Shot by Police in Grocery Store Incident

A man was shot and killed by police after he waved a 13-inch kitchen knife outside a grocery store, according to the New York City police.

“This is a stark reminder of the risks our officers endure whenever they wear their uniforms. This morning was no different,” stated Capt. Andrew Natiu from the Manhattan Northern Patrol Bureau during a press briefing.

As reported by the NYPD, a 53-year-old man was involved in an altercation with another individual inside a wet market on East 120th Street at around 1:15 a.m. Monday. The situation escalated to the point where several store employees had to forcibly remove him after he became agitated.

Shortly afterward, the man returned to the grocery store, brandishing a large kitchen knife and banging on the glass. Surveillance footage captured him yelling and pushing against the store’s entrance.

By around 1:44 a.m., officers from the 25th Precinct arrived at the scene, responding to reports of a suspect threatening employees with a knife. Once on-site, they directed the man to drop the weapon, but he instead advanced toward them with the knife extended.

At that point, one officer discharged their weapon, hitting the man. Emergency services were immediately summoned, and he was taken to Harlem Hospital. Reports indicate he underwent surgery and is currently in critical but stable condition.

Authorities have not disclosed the man’s identity, though he is known to the police due to previous arrests. Investigators found approximately seven shell casings at the scene, and the situation is under ongoing investigation.
