A senior Polish official recently appeared to make an unkind comparison between President Biden’s performance in Thursday’s debate and the decline of ancient Rome.
Poland’s Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski made the comments in a post on X on Friday. The remarks were posted in English, suggesting they were aimed at an English-speaking audience, as Sikorski typically posts in Polish.
In his X post, Sikorski takes aim at Marcus Aurelius’ son, Emperor Commodus, whose reign marked the end of Pax Romana, a period of peace and prosperity in Ancient Rome.
“Marcus Aurelius was a great emperor, but he botched the selection of his successor by handing the baton to his incompetent son Commodus (a character from Gladiator),” Sikorski writes. “His disastrous rule marked the beginning of Rome’s decline.”

“It’s important to manage the drive into the sunset.”
Biden’s recent debate performances have sparked commentary around the world and raised concerns about his advanced age and declining cognitive abilities.
Media from Russia, China, Iran and elsewhere all picked up on the debate, using it as an opportunity to criticise the US.

“In the end, Moscow is convinced that the social crisis that has engulfed the United States is good for Russia,” Kofler said.
