Political leaders are sending their thoughts to the Obama family and remembering former first lady Michelle Obama’s mother, Marian Robinson, following her death on Friday.
Robinson died at age 86, her family said in a statement. The Chicago-born Robinson lived in the White House with former President Barack Obama during his presidency, but the family noted that the “fineliness and glitz” of the house “never suited” her.

“My mother, Marian Robinson, was my rock and always there for me no matter what I needed,” she said. “She was a constant source of support for our entire family and it is with my heart that I share with you today that I announce her passing.”

“Even in our grief, we are inspired by the incredible gift of her life,” he said. “We will live the rest of our lives striving to follow her example.”
President Biden and First Lady Jill Biden A statement was issued On Saturday, they paid tribute to Robinson, who they knew as a “devoted mother and grandmother.”
“Like us, she believed that family is the beginning, the middle and the end. She moved to the White House to be there for her family when they needed her most, and in doing so, she served her country alongside them,” the Bidens’ statement said. “Her life reminds us that we are a great nation because we are good people.”
The Bidens sent their “deep love” to the Obama family.
Bernice King, daughter of civil rights activist Martin Luther King Jr., sent her “deepest condolences” to the family.
“My thoughts and prayers are with you during this difficult time.” She said: “May you find peace and strength in your cherished memories.”

“We are deeply saddened by the death of her mother, Marian Robinson. May they find strength and comfort in each other and in the cherished memories of Mrs. Robinson’s remarkable life,” the center said.
Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) also posted a tribute to Robinson.
“What a wonderful woman. What a wonderful life.” He said. “We are mourning the loss of Marian Robinson and our prayers are with her, Michelle Obama, the Obamas and the Robinson family and all their families.”
Sen. Amy Klobuchar (D-Minn.) sent her love to all the grieving families.
“She was truly a one-of-a-kind woman who gave unconditional love to her family.” Klobuchar wrote:
“Michelle Obama and her family are heartbroken,” Gov. Gretchen Whitmer (D-Mich.) said. “Ms. Robinson’s strength, kindness and commitment are qualities we should all strive to embody. Her memory will continue to inspire us.” Governor Whitmer said in the post:
The Rev. Al Sharpton said Robinson was “an incredible woman who epitomized strength, grace and resilience.”
“She was a true warrior and an inspiration to us all.” He wrote: “We are grateful for her presence in the Robinson/Obama family and the impact she had as a loving mother and grandmother. May her spirit continue to guide and inspire us.”
