Declining American Pride Among Democrats
Recent Gallup polls indicate that Democrats are feeling less proud to identify as American now compared to over two decades ago.
The findings reveal that a record number of adults report feeling “very” or “extremely” proud to be American. Specifically, only 41% claim to be extremely proud, with 17% indicating they’re simply proud. Democrats show a significant drop in pride, as reported by Fox News, leading to a major shift in how pride is perceived.
The data suggests a decline in American pride over the past decade. Notably, there’s a staggering 56-point gap in pride levels between Republicans (92% expressing a sense of pride) and Democrats (only 36%).
This drop among Democrats has been especially pronounced, with a decline of 26 percentage points from last year’s 62% pride level.
Gallup’s senior editor, Jeffrey Jones, noted that each successive generation seems less patriotic than the last, with Generation Z showing the lowest levels of pride compared to previous age groups.
Interestingly, even older generations exhibit lower levels of patriotism over time, primarily influenced by Democratic views within those groups, according to Jones.
Both Gen Z Democrats and Republicans do still express some degree of gratitude for being American, though.
The poll also hinted at uncertainty regarding the recent presidential decision about Iran’s nuclear program and its potential impact on national pride.
Currently, about 58% of U.S. adults feel “extremely proud,” while 19% consider themselves “moderately proud,” and 11% are “somewhat proud.” This total aligns closely with the 21% recorded in 2020. Notably, before 2018, fewer than 10% of U.S. adults regularly reported minimal or no sense of national pride.
