Recent violent attacks in Cincinnati have sparked significant attention locally and across the nation, especially as the mayoral election approaches.

Republican mayoral candidate Corey Bowman highlighted this week that one of the individuals charged in connection with the attack had already secured bail. He expressed concerns over the lack of police presence during the incident.

This shocking incident left six individuals injured, including a single mother who requested to remain anonymous due to ongoing threats.

Bowman, who is the brother of Vice President JD Vance, commented to Fox Digital:

City governance often fails to support the police adequately. Officers are repeatedly told to hold back instead of enforcing the law. Consequently, the system feels like one of catch-and-release where offenders are out on the streets almost immediately.

He mentioned that many officers share their frustrations, noting that it’s disheartening to see criminals released so quickly after arrests.

Currently, six suspects face charges linked to the attack. Among them are Patrick Rosemond, Jermaine Matthews, Montian Meriweather, Dequila Vernon, Dominique Kittle, and Aisha Devarn.

Authorities have indicated that Merriweather and Matthews were involved in orchestrating the brawl, seemingly planning an “ambush.” Matthews was released after posting a substantial bond recently.

The latest defendant to be arrested was Aisha Devarn, who faces charges for allegedly assaulting a woman, Holly, who was left unconscious after the attack.

Following the incident, Mayor Aftab Pureval clarified during a press engagement that “Cincinnati will not tolerate violent crime of any kind, be it fighting or gun-related.” He underscored efforts to pursue those responsible.

Bowman pointed to what he perceived as a broader lack of control in the city, attributing it as a contributing factor to the violence that unfolded.

“There have been numerous initiatives over the years that have drained our city’s resources. We need to invest more in our police, enhance patrols, and focus on recruitment to effectively tackle these issues,” he articulated.

On the night of the incident, only 11 officers were on duty in the Central Business District.

Moreover, a Democratic city council member, Victoria Parks, received backlash for her remark suggesting that the victim somehow “invited” the assault.

As the assailants are predominantly black, and the victims white, the FBI is now investigating if there was a violation of civil rights.
