Pope Francis passed away Monday morning, announced by Cardinal Kevin Ferrell of Camerlengo, Vatican.
“This morning at 7:35, Bishop Francis of Rome returned to his father’s house. His life was dedicated to the service of the Lord and his church,” Farrell said in the announcement.
“With great gratitude for his example as a true disciple of the Lord Jesus, we praise Pope Francis’ soul to God’s infinite and merciful love, one and the Trinity.”
Francis, who suffered from chronic lung disease and removed part of one of his lungs as a young man, was admitted to Gemeri Hospital on February 14th due to a respiratory crisis that had developed double pneumonia. He spent 38 days there, the Pope’s longest hospitalization in 12 years.
Pope Francis marked Easter on Sunday, blessing the thousands who gathered Mass in St. Peter’s Square, and appeared on a surprise Popemovie tour around Piazza on Sunday.
The 88-year-old Pope did not celebrate Mass in the square. Instead, he delegated to Cardinal Angelo Comastri, the retired archbishop of St. Peter’s Cathedral.
Francis was diagnosed with bronchitis in early February, but continued to embrace daily audiences in the Vatican hotel suite, and was hosting an outdoor mass on Sunday, February 9th.
However, he handed over his speech to the aide for him to read aloud, saying he was struggling to breathe.
Francis, who removed a portion of one lung at age 21, has long fought health issues, particularly attacks of acute bronchitis in the winter, using a wheelchair, walker or cane when moving around his apartment.
Popes are particularly prone to pulmonary infections because they develop pleurisy as adults (inflammation of the thin outer covering of the lungs).

Pope Francis passed away Monday morning, announced by Cardinal Kevin Ferrell of Camerlengo, Vatican.
“This morning at 7:35, Bishop Francis of Rome returned to his father’s house. His life was dedicated to the service of the Lord and his church,” Farrell said in the announcement.
“With great gratitude for his example as a true disciple of the Lord Jesus, we praise Pope Francis’ soul to God’s infinite and merciful love, one and the Trinity.”
Francis, who suffered from chronic lung disease and removed part of one of his lungs as a young man, was admitted to Gemeri Hospital on February 14th due to a respiratory crisis that had developed double pneumonia. He spent 38 days there, the Pope’s longest hospitalization in 12 years.
Pope Francis marked Easter on Sunday, blessing the thousands who gathered Mass in St. Peter’s Square, and appeared on a surprise Popemovie tour around Piazza on Sunday.
The 88-year-old Pope did not celebrate Mass in the square. Instead, he delegated to Cardinal Angelo Comastri, the retired archbishop of St. Peter’s Cathedral.
Francis was diagnosed with bronchitis in early February, but continued to embrace daily audiences in the Vatican hotel suite, and was hosting an outdoor mass on Sunday, February 9th.
However, he handed over his speech to the aide for him to read aloud, saying he was struggling to breathe.
Francis, who removed a portion of one lung at age 21, has long fought health issues, particularly attacks of acute bronchitis in the winter, using a wheelchair, walker or cane when moving around his apartment.
Popes are particularly prone to pulmonary infections because they develop pleurisy as adults (inflammation of the thin outer covering of the lungs).
