Pope Leo XIV Appeals for Peace in Ukraine Conflict
Pope Leo XIV has reached out to Russian President Vladimir Putin, urging for peace amid the ongoing conflict with Ukraine. This outreach follows his recent appointment as head of the Catholic Church. During a call on Wednesday, the Pope highlighted the “importance of dialogue,” though it remains unclear if Putin supported direct conversations with Ukraine’s President, Volodymyr Zelensky.
The discussion included humanitarian matters and prisoner exchanges, but Putin seemed to suggest that Kyiv was “escalating” the situation on the battlefield during the conversation. He remarked to the Pope that the Ukrainian administration was relying on tensions and was responsible for attacks on civil infrastructure in Russia.
This comment was in reference to a recent explosion on the Karch Bridge, a crucial link connecting Russia to Crimea, an area that was annexed by Moscow in 2014. It followed a significant drone operation targeting Russian military assets, which reportedly led to the destruction of several aircraft capable of launching cruise missiles.
Putin’s allegations have raised eyebrows as the Kremlin continues to face criticism for its lack of genuine commitment to ceasefire efforts. Amid ongoing strikes on Ukrainian cities, the effectiveness of any peace negotiations is being called into question.
Furthermore, the Kremlin has invited the Vatican to take a more proactive stance in safeguarding the religious freedoms of Ukrainian believers, particularly those affiliated with the Ukrainian Orthodox Church, which has historic ties to Russia. This request comes as Ukrainian authorities are investigating religious leaders for their supposed sympathies towards Moscow. In the wake of this conflict, many churches have been destroyed, and reports indicate that numerous clergy members have lost their lives since hostilities began.
