Pope Leo XIV to Undergo Lung Surgery
In a heartfelt announcement made after the traditional Angelus prayer in St. Peter’s Square, Pope Leo XIV revealed plans for surgery to remove a small nodule found in one of his lungs.
The 71-year-old pontiff explained that this condition was discovered during routine health checks. Fortunately, he noted that the nodule was detected early and is localized, which led his medical team to recommend immediate surgical intervention to avoid potential complications.
Pope Leo expressed his gratitude for the prayerful support of the global Catholic community and asked for continued prayers as he prepares for the procedure.
According to a statement from the Holy See Press Office, the pope will check into Rome’s Agostino Gemelli Polyclinic Hospital for the surgery.
Vatican spokesperson Matteo Bruni provided further details, indicating that the operation is scheduled for the coming days, with a planned recovery period of about a week in the hospital.
The Gemelli Hospital has a history of treating popes for major surgeries, ensuring it is well-prepared for the pontiff’s recovery. During his hospital stay, the pope’s regular public engagements and meetings will be temporarily halted.
The announcement prompted an outpouring of support and prayers from both religious and political figures around the world. U.S. church leaders, bishops’ conferences, and global leaders, including Israeli President Isaac Herzog, extended their best wishes for a swift recovery.
Additionally, Vatican officials expressed their confidence in the medical team and assured Catholics worldwide that updates on the pope’s health will be shared after the procedure is completed.
