Pope Leo XIV Urges Worldwide Fasting on Friday to Support Peace Initiatives

Pope Leo XIV Calls for Global Day of Prayer and Fasting

Pope Leo XIV has encouraged Christians worldwide to join in a day of prayer and fasting this Friday. In his address, he highlighted the urgent need for prayers concerning the Russian invasion of Ukraine and the ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas. Since becoming the leader of the Catholic Church in May, he has actively sought peace in these troubled regions and has engaged with various national leaders. Notably, he hosted Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky at the Vatican in July.

The political landscape concerning the invasion of Ukraine took a significant turn last week when President Trump hosted Vladimir Putin in Alaska. Discussions centered on improving U.S.-Russia relations and finding ways to end the conflict. Following this, Trump met with Zelensky and several Western leaders to discuss outcomes from the summit and potential future meetings between Zelensky and Putin.

During a general audience on Wednesday, the Pope announced the upcoming day of fasting on August 22. “Mary is honored as our earthly mother and Queen of Peace,” he emphasized, urging Christians to take part in this “Prayer and Fasting Day” for peace.

“I ask you,” he said, “to include intentions for peace, especially for Ukraine and the Middle East, and for the world, advocating for disarmed peace.” His appeal came as he spoke at the annual Rimini conference in Italy, where he expressed that “peace isn’t just an ideal; it’s a humble journey marked by everyday acts.” He encouraged non-violent approaches, educational initiatives, and welcoming projects that transform fear into opportunities for connection.

Continuing his message, he stated, “Serving a living God means rejecting the idolatry of profit.” He made it clear that a faith that turns away from the desolation of the world is not genuinely following Jesus Christ. His focus remains on prayer and hope rather than directly on policy matters. In response to a question about Ukraine negotiations, he stated that while hope exists, diligent work and earnest prayer are essential for progressing toward peace.

The hope for peace in Ukraine has gained prominence in international news this week, especially following the recent Trump-Putin meeting. The summit in Anchorage showcased American military strength, highlighted by Trump’s tour of fighter jets and a B-2 Spirit Stealth bomber during the handshake with Putin.

After that meeting, both sides characterized the discussion as constructive. President Trump welcomed Zelensky at the White House afterward. Their one-on-one meeting was followed by discussions with various European leaders, and while they tentatively agreed on a security framework to address Russian aggression, the specifics remain unconfirmed. Trump indicated that bringing Zelensky and Putin together for a trilateral summit could be the next step in the peace process.

In response, Russian officials appeared receptive to the peace talks. Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov mentioned ongoing discussions regarding “security guarantees,” emphasizing the need for Russian input on the matter. He asserted that European nations understand that any arrangements regarding security against potential Russian invasion must involve Russia’s perspective.

Pope Leo has continued his dialogue with both Putin and Zelensky since assuming his role. He expressed his concern for Ukraine during his first Sunday blessing as Pope, stating, “I hold the suffering of my beloved Ukrainians close to my heart. Let’s strive for an authentic, just, and lasting peace as soon as possible.”

In June, he also reached out to Putin, offering the Vatican’s assistance in mediating discussions between the two nations. Matteo Bruni, Holy See spokesperson, shared that the Pope urged Russia to make a pro-peace gesture, emphasizing the importance of dialogue in resolving conflicts.

This outreach followed a similar conversation with Zelensky in May, which the Ukrainian president described as warm and substantive. “Ukraine is eager to end this war and is doing everything possible to achieve that. We are now waiting for a comparable move from Russia,” Zelensky noted, inviting the Pope for a visit to Ukraine to inspire hope among its people. Zelensky visited the Vatican in July and expressed gratitude for the meaningful conversations held with Pope Leo, indicating the possibility of a meeting at a higher level to halt Russian incursions and work toward enduring peace.
