Ice Cream Preferences in America Shift Towards Adventure
As ice cream season heats up across the nation, it’s clear that while Americans still love their traditional favorites, there’s a growing curiosity for more unique flavors. Vanilla continues to dominate as the favorite flavor in the U.S., based on purchasing data from summer 2024 analyzed by Instacart.
Following vanilla, chocolate and cookies and cream round out the top three flavors. A recent survey by the American Adult Association supports this, revealing that vanilla, chocolate, and strawberry are consistently among the most liked flavors.
Interestingly, numerous other flavors made the list as well, including mint chocolate chip, cookie dough, coffee, and butter pecan. A staggering 97% of those surveyed said they enjoy or love ice cream in general.
While these favorites might seem predictable, there’s also a significant rise in less traditional flavors. For instance, green tea ice cream orders increased by 24% over the last year, and flavors like pistachio and pineapple-coconut saw jumps of 25% and 37%, respectively.
Consumers are also leaning toward healthier options. Major brands like Haagen-Dazs and Ben & Jerry’s remain among the fastest growing, but smaller companies offering lower-calorie versions are stepping up, too. Brands like Halo Top and Arctic Zero are responding to this trend with lighter, sugar-restricted options. Meanwhile, Yasso incorporates Greek yogurt for higher protein content, and So Delicious specializes in dairy-free varieties using plant-based milks.
Interestingly, the dairy-free segment is transforming the entire frozen dessert landscape. Sales of traditional ice cream saw a slight decline in 2025, while lighter options grew by 29%. Additionally, there’s a noticeable shift toward artisanal ice creams made with high-quality, locally sourced ingredients, and a rise in international flavors like ube, chai, and dulce de leche.
The growing demand for visually interesting and original flavors, especially among young consumers, seems driven by social media. Ultimately, the enduring popularity of classic flavors may stem from their familiarity and versatility, with vanilla often praised for pairing well with various desserts and toppings.
Regardless of changing tastes, America’s love for ice cream fuels a vast industry generating roughly $7.5 billion in sales.
