The USPS is currently facing significant “economic challenges,” reporting a net loss of $3.3 billion in the last quarter. This is nearly double the losses from the same period last year, largely due to mandatory costs associated with federal employee benefits and other unexpected expenses.
“As we celebrate 250 years of service to our nation, our organization is still grappling with economic headwinds. We are dedicated to managing costs better, boosting revenue, and modernizing our infrastructure,” said the agency.
On Friday, the USPS Board of Directors announced the appointment of former Waste Management CEO David Steiner to lead the agency after he successfully passed the necessary ethics and security checks.
While there might be a decline in travel expenses for the recent reporting period, a financial survey released Friday indicated notable increases in non-cash worker compensation adjustments, as well as employee compensation and other operational costs.
“The financial outcomes for the second quarter indicate major challenges beyond our control,” commented USPS Chief Financial Officer Luke Grossman. “However, we are seeing continued growth in package revenues, which is beneficial for our business along with reductions in shipping costs and overall work hours.”
The USPS has implemented a 10-Year Strategic Efficiency Plan, resulting in $116 million in transportation savings and a decrease of 10 million work hours quarterly, as reported on Friday.
“While additional management and legislative actions are necessary for our plan’s full success, it provides a framework for increasing revenue, working more efficiently, and achieving financial sustainability while handling both mail and packages through an integrated network,” Grossman added.
Former President Trump hinted at taking control of the independent USPS, potentially placing it under the Commerce Department, a move that raised eyebrows since the agency has operated independently since the 1970s.
“We need a post office that functions well without incurring massive losses,” Trump stated during a ceremony for the new commerce secretary. “This agency is losing an incredible amount of money.”
The Government Efficiency (DOGE) has initiated a review of USPS operations, proposing reductions in workforce and some services.
However, there are concerns about how this could affect rural communities and the potential shift toward privatization. Rep. Jerry Connolly (D-Va.), who is the ranking member of the Committee on Surveillance and Government Reform, expressed worry regarding statements made by USPS leadership that suggested the Trump administration was compromising the independence of federal institutions.
“This erosion will have severe implications for all Americans, particularly those in rural areas who depend on postal services for mail delivery, medications, and voting,” he stated.
