Potential burglary suspects concealing phone cameras in residential front yards, according to police

Law enforcement across the United States is increasingly concerned about a troubling trend involving hidden cameras being placed in residential yards and gardens. Authorities suspect that these cameras are used by potential burglars to identify homes that seem to be unoccupied.

For instance, on May 24, the NYPD received a report about illegal surveillance shortly after midnight. A spokesperson stated that a cell phone, charger, and cable were found buried in a front yard. “There have been no arrests, and the investigation is ongoing,” the spokesperson added. They encouraged anyone who believes they may be a victim to contact their local precinct or call 911.

Authorities in California have flagged similar issues, noting that a robbery linked to a South American theft ring has involved the strategic placement of hidden cameras. These cameras can provide a significant advantage to thieves planning their crimes.

The victim from Queens, New York, who reported the hidden camera, chose not to provide further details about the incident to avoid hindering the investigation. However, they did share photos of the surveillance equipment with media outlets.

This trend of hidden cameras has been reported from various states, including California and Massachusetts. A recent report highlighted cases of hidden surveillance devices found in flower beds in Los Angeles County, where residents were cautioned about the growing number of hidden cameras placed by theft groups.

According to the Sheriff’s Office in LA County, these organized crime groups are often composed of Chileans and Colombians on time-limited tourist visas. They are described as “highly organized criminal enterprises” that travel between states, carrying out thefts. The groups utilize advanced technology for remote camera access, allowing them to conduct real-time surveillance of potential targets.
