President does not back me and counters 'serious threat' Mamdani

Andrew Cuomo, the former governor of New York and recent mayoral candidate, has reacted to President Trump’s endorsement of him. Cuomo noted that Trump seems to be more against the Democratic Socialist candidate, Zoran Mamdani, whom he views as an “existential threat.”

Cuomo pointed out that both he and Trump see Mamdani as an existential threat, with Trump labeling him as a “communist.” Meanwhile, Cuomo expressed that the ideals of democratic socialism—like abolishing prisons and privatizing real estate—are quite troubling.

“The president does not support me. He opposes Zoran Mamdani,” Cuomo stated. “Trump believes that Mamdani poses a real threat, and I share that view. I see him as a socialist—not a pseudo-socialist. This American Democratic Socialism advocates for government control over production, eliminating private property, and decriminalizing prostitution, which is just unacceptable.”

On Monday, Trump encouraged New Yorkers to vote for Cuomo rather than Mamdani, saying that the city would deteriorate under “communist” leadership. He also warned that voting for Republican candidate Curtis Sliwa would effectively support Mamdani.

“It’s my responsibility to alert the nation that if Mr. Mamdani wins, it would lead to a catastrophic economic and social situation in New York City,” Trump shared on Truth Social. “His ideologies have historically failed for over a millennium. I’d prefer to see a successful Democratic Party over a Communist who has a track record of total failure.”

During a recent press conference, Mamdani asserted he would defend the rights of undocumented immigrants in New York City, emphasizing his intention to support the city’s sanctuary policies.

“I am determined to be a mayor who upholds sanctuary city policies and ensures every New Yorker can live freely here while holding everyone accountable to the law,” Mamdani declared.

Mamdani has also proposed establishing municipal grocery stores and has voiced objections to police involvement in domestic dispute interventions. Reflecting on his views as an immigrant, he stated in a podcast back in July 2020:

“Police don’t create safety. We’ve assigned so many roles to police that really don’t belong there. For situations like domestic violence or someone in distress, it would be better managed by trained professionals rather than armed officers.”

Trump’s endorsement for Cuomo comes after polls indicated Mamdani was leading both Cuomo and Sliwa in the New York mayoral race. A recent Quinnipiac University survey revealed that Mamdani had 43% support, while Cuomo garnered 33%, and Sliwa had 14%.

Another poll by Alast Intel showed Mamdani with 43.9% support, Cuomo at 39.4%, and Sliwa at 15.5% among 2,404 potential voters surveyed. When it came to a head-to-head scenario between Mamdani and Cuomo, Cuomo received 49.7% of the votes compared to Mamdani’s 44.1%.
