Trump Criticizes Supreme Court Justices on Tariff Ruling

President Donald Trump expressed reluctance in praising three liberal justices on the U.S. Supreme Court for blocking his attempts to impose emergency tariffs on trading partners. He mentioned their “loyalty” to the Democratic Party during a press conference on Friday.

“The Democrats on the court seem pleased, but they will always vote against these measures,” Trump remarked. “They’re not just reflexively negative. Much like Congress, they consistently oppose anything that could make America strong or great again. Honestly, I find them to be quite an embarrassment for the country. They neglect solid cases based simply on their positions.”

He added, “You can’t undermine their loyalty. That’s something we’re dealing with as well.”

Earlier on Friday, Trump held the press conference shortly after the Supreme Court ruled against him in a 6-3 decision, stating he had overstepped his authority by trying to use emergency powers to set sweeping tariffs. Justices Brett Kavanaugh, Clarence Thomas, and Samuel Alito dissented from this ruling, and Trump was quick to commend their stance.

“I want to extend my gratitude to Judges Thomas, Alito, and Kavanaugh for their strength and wisdom. They show true love for our country, and I believe Americans can be proud of these judges right now. Reading the opposing opinions leaves no room for argument,” he said.

Trump has often touted these emergency tariffs as a cornerstone of his economic strategy. He believes they would have generated substantial revenue from foreign nations that he claims have long taken advantage of the U.S.

In addition, the tariffs were intended to encourage both domestic and foreign companies to establish operations in the U.S. to avoid these taxes, which, he argues, would ultimately elevate U.S. employment and manufacturing.

Trump pointed out that the recent ruling doesn’t eliminate the possibility of tariffs altogether; it only limits how the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA) can be applied. The IEEPA, established in 1977, grants the president the power to regulate international economic transactions following a declared national emergency involving foreign threats.

Despite the setback, Trump remains steadfast that the ruling doesn’t invalidate tariffs themselves but restricts specific implementations.
