Trump Announces End to Killings in Iran
On Wednesday afternoon, President Donald Trump revealed from the Oval Office that he received information indicating that killings in Iran have ceased.
“We’re hearing that the killings are stopping in Iran. They seem to be continuing to stop, without any executions or impending plans for execution,” Trump stated. “I’m told this on good authority. We’ll look into that.”
This announcement came during a signing ceremony for legislation aimed at overturning an Obama-era policy affecting public schools and the National School Lunch Program.
Protests in Iran and the Crackdown
Widespread protests against Ayatollah Ali Khamenei’s government have erupted across Iran, largely fueled by economic dissatisfaction and discontent over political repression. Reports suggest that thousands have died due to the regime’s brutal response to the protests.
According to the US-based Human Rights Defenders News Agency, approximately 1,847 of the deceased were protesters, with 135 being security personnel. Other estimates indicate that the death toll could exceed 3,000.
Iran’s judiciary has indicated a swift response, with officials discussing the possibility of expedited trials for those arrested, raising concerns among human rights advocates regarding the potential for severe sentences, including the death penalty. “But I just received information that the killings have stopped,” Trump continued. “People have been discussing in the past few days that executions have been halted and the death penalty will not proceed. Today was supposed to be the execution date.”
Political Reactions and Support for Protesters
Trump and his administration have voiced support for those protesting, even encouraging them to “take over” state institutions. On Tuesday, the President announced on Truth Social that he had called off all meetings with Iranian officials until the violence against protesters ceased, adding, “Assistance is on the way.”
In light of the unrest, some US military personnel have been ordered to leave their bases in the Middle East, according to a confirmation from US officials.
Moreover, Trump’s administration is considering military options against Iran if the violence continues, although press secretary Caroline Leavitt emphasized that diplomacy remains the preferred approach.
The current protests are regarded as some of the most intense since 2022, following the killing of a woman by the morality police that spurred widespread demonstrations across the nation.
