Mexican President Promises Legal Action After ICE Shooting
Claudia Sheinbaum, the President of Mexico, announced plans for legal action against the United States following the shooting death of a Mexican man living in Texas for several years.
Lorenzo Salgado Araujo, aged 52, was fatally shot during a traffic stop by an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officer in Houston during a “targeted enforcement operation” last Tuesday.
“There isn’t a justification for putting them in jail or resorting to violence,” Sheinbaum stated, preparing to take legal measures which she emphasized as crucial.
The Department of Homeland Security described the incident differently. They asserted that Araujo had fired first when he didn’t follow orders and attempted to drive towards a police officer.
After being shot in the abdomen, Araujo was declared dead upon arrival at the hospital. Family members contest the narrative, arguing he had no criminal background and had sought legal status over a year prior to the shooting.
“We wish to escalate our efforts beyond the diplomatic dialogues we’ve engaged in, as we cannot accept the mistreatment of our fellow citizens in the U.S. That’s why we’re considering additional measures,” Sheinbaum conveyed to reporters.
“This is yet another incident where our compatriots have tragically died due to immigration enforcement issues. Their only ‘crime’ is being undocumented, often while working for U.S. companies. There’s absolutely no reason for this type of violent response,” she elaborated, indicating the severity of the situation.
Sheinbaum had previously clashed with former President Donald Trump regarding immigration policies and tariffs.
As part of the enforcement action, three other individuals were detained.
Local officials quickly called for a thorough investigation into the shooting. Democratic Representative Sylvia Garcia emphasized the need for an independent scrutiny of the facts surrounding the use of deadly force.
Harris County Attorney Abby Kamin echoed these sentiments, asserting, “We demand a full and transparent investigation. My office is prepared to assist the community and aid in uncovering the details of this tragic event.”
