President Trump's deportation initiatives get recognition from an unexpected figure.

Nogales, Mexico, Responds to U.S. Immigration Policy

Across the southern border wall in the sun-soaked desert of Nogales, Sonora, Mexico, the local community has been vocal about its support for President Donald Trump’s immigration strategy. The city is a vibrant mix of colorful street art and bustling vendors, all underscored by an evolving dialogue about immigration.

One resident, Gim Nogales, noted, “What the U.S. does with immigration policy is like cleaning your home, and then they say, ‘Now, here are my new rules.'” He added that he believes these measures are necessary and, in his opinion, ultimately beneficial.

He emphasized the need to break a cycle where deported individuals simply return, stating, “After deporting them, they come back over and over—it’s a loop that’s got to stop.” According to him, this new approach aims not just to manage the situation but to improve the economy of both nations.

When discussing the differences in Trump’s immigration methods compared to past administrations, the mayor highlighted the strategy of transporting immigrants rather than returning them to overwhelmed cities.

Mayor Gim Nogales reiterated that many individuals continue to attempt crossing the border multiple times. “If we deport ten people, a significant number will try again—it’s a very frustrating process,” he noted, indicating that a new strategy is essential. He believes Trump’s approach has elements that could lead to long-term improvement.

Border Patrol’s Success in Trump’s Strategy

As the U.S. handles deportations, Nogales finds itself more directly impacted than many other cities. City officials noted that they prepared for a much larger influx of immigrants, estimating that between 2,000 and 3,000 might arrive daily. However, in reality, they have been receiving an average of just about 60 immigrants daily since February 4.

The mayor praised the coordination between Mexican and U.S. authorities, including regular meetings aimed at ensuring that both sides work together efficiently. “We aim to make sure that everyone involved is synchronized to prevent issues for both returnees and new immigrants,” he said.

Financial Implications of Increased Immigrant Influx

Mexico and the U.S. have established joint initiatives to address crime along the border, focusing on building safer and more secure crossings. These efforts have included ongoing agreements designed to facilitate the safe return of Mexican nationals.

Mayor Gim Nogales concluded by highlighting that the relationship between the two countries must be one of cooperation. “We need to turn challenges into opportunities,” he said, expressing a belief in the potential for positive outcomes amid ongoing difficulties.
