A Mexican National Dies After Immigration Pursuit Leads to Crash in Florida
A Mexican national lost his life in Florida after fleeing from immigration officials and colliding with an oncoming vehicle. This tragic incident took place early Tuesday morning in St. Augustine.
The Florida Highway Patrol reported that Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents were present at a Wawa gas station on State Route 16 when the situation unfolded. Their actions prompted four individuals to exit their vehicle and attempt to escape. One of them eventually ran onto the highway, where he was struck by a semi-truck. Although the truck driver stopped to help, he was unable to save the man.
One witness, who had been parked at the gas station with her children, described the scene as horrific. “The sound of him getting hit is constantly playing in my head,” she shared. “I’ll never look at that road the same way.” She added that she prayed for the man and hopes he is at peace now.
The Department of Homeland Security has confirmed that the individual who was hit was a 28-year-old Mexican national.
A spokesperson for DHS mentioned that the operation near St. John’s, Florida, was conducted by law enforcement on July 14. The Florida Highway Patrol and Homeland Security Investigators are looking into the matter, with updates to be provided as they arise.
The specifics of what prompted ICE’s investigation at the gas station on that Tuesday morning remain unclear. Local news outlet First Coast News spoke with Mark Bowman, a crime and safety expert with past experience at ICE. He suggested that the operation looked like a forced removal operation but noted that there are still many unanswered questions regarding the investigators’ contact with the vehicle’s occupants.
Bowman pointed out that the four individuals might have been workers waiting for someone or potentially involved in illegal activities. He emphasized the need for transparency about the reason for their arrest and the offenses committed.
Florida Governor Ron DeSantis stated that his agency is working in cooperation with ICE across Florida. In their partnership, FHP reported that they arrested 6,200 undocumented immigrants last year.
