Preston Edmeade Moves to NC State

Preston Edmeade has made a significant transition, shifting from Hofstra University to North Carolina State University in the Atlantic Coast Conference.

The impressive freshman point guard played a pivotal role in Hofstra’s first NCAA Tournament appearance in 25 years, and after a notable performance, he decided to join the Wolfpack.

“I felt a strong connection with the coaching staff and believe I can integrate well into their game plan,” the 19-year-old from Deer Park shared. “This decision isn’t about money for me.”

Edmeade, recognized as the CAA Rookie of the Year, was instrumental in leading Hofstra to a conference finals appearance, famously nailing a buzzer-beater against Towson. However, he quickly explored opportunities with universities like Oregon, Villanova, and Georgia after changing his initial decision to stay at Hofstra.

“Coach Speedy Claxton was supportive of my choice, and we’re still quite close,” Edmeade remarked.

Claxton added, “He’s my player, and that won’t change.” Interestingly, Edmeade comes from a family with a strong basketball background, with two older brothers who also played at the collegiate level.

This shift in direction, which Edmeade indicated was influenced by rule changes post-season, aligns with his aspiration to reach the NBA and proudly represent his Long Island roots.

“I carry my Long Island pride with me wherever I go,” he stated, also mentioning how his bond with former Hofstra teammates remains strong. “That place will always be home to me.”

Edmeade’s trainer, Jerry Powell—known for coaching NBA stars such as LeBron James and Paul George—believes Edmeade has what it takes for a professional career. Currently, Edmeade, who averaged 15.9 points per game, insists on focusing on the present.

“My goal is to head to NC State and contribute to winning a lot of games,” he expressed, showing enthusiasm for the challenges ahead.

As for the NCAA Tournament, Edmeade is eager to return to the big stage after Hofstra’s 90-70 loss to Alabama in the opener. “We want to excel in this tournament,” he noted, adding that facing Alabama again would be a great opportunity. “A rematch would definitely be better.”
