Pride in Being American Stays Near Record Low on Independence Day

Extreme pride in being an American continues to hover at a record low, according to a Gallup poll released just hours before Independence Day.

of Gallup Poll Forty-one percent of Americans surveyed said they were “very proud” of their American identity, up from 39% last year and 38% in 2022, the lowest since Gallup began asking the question in 2001. Reports.

The numbers remain low despite President Joe Biden’s promise to “restore the soul of America and secure America’s future.”

In the first poll, conducted in January 2001, 55% of American adults said they were “very proud” to be American; that number rose sharply from 65% to 70% between 2002 and 2004, before beginning to decline in 2005.

Those who said they were “very proud” have remained low since 2018, averaging about 42 percent.

Republicans’ pride in America consistently exceeds that of Democrats, but independents’ views are closer to those of Democrats.

Currently, 59% of Republicans, 34% of Democrats, and 36% of independents say they are very proud to be Americans. The current 25-point gap in extreme pride between Republicans and Democrats is similar to the average gap of 28 points since 2001.

A recent Gallup poll found that while a small number of respondents were “very proud” of their American identity, only 10 percent were “somewhat proud” of being “American,” and 5 percent were “not proud at all.”

Similarly, 18% said they were “moderately proud” and 26% said they were “very proud.”

“The percentage of U.S. adults who say they are very proud to be American is near an all-time low, but about two-thirds continue to be at least very proud,” Gallup said.

The survey was conducted among 1,005 adults between June 3 and 23 and has a margin of error of 4 percentage points at the 95 percent confidence level.
