Prime Minister Anthony Albanese Apologizes for Saying He Would Sleep with Kylie Minogue

Albanese Apologizes to Kylie Minogue

On July 6, Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese extended an apology to singer Kylie Minogue after acknowledging that he had “disrespected” her.

Albanese made some offhand comments about Minogue during a July 2 episode of the podcast “Bush Deep,” hosted by Nicki Osbourne. In a segment where Osbourne asked Albanese which of three female celebrities—Minogue, Nicole Kidman, or Rhonda Birchmore—he would prefer to marry, Albanese initially hesitated to answer, mentioning he was recently married. However, when pressed further by Osbourne, he ultimately chose Minogue.

The host followed up with a more provocative question: “Are you going to marry Kylie, have sex with her, and date her?”

Albanese’s response was blunt: “All of the above.”

This led to immediate backlash from both the public and opposition lawmakers. Liberal Senator Sarah Henderson from Victoria condemned Albanese’s remarks, labeling them as “disrespectful to women, embarrassing for Australians, and a disgrace to the office of prime minister.”

Henderson highlighted that Albanese’s comments illustrated poor judgment at a time when the Labor Party’s credibility was wavering. She posed a rhetorical question: “How far can this Prime Minister fall? Australians deserve better than this.”

NSW Liberal Senator Maria Kovacic echoed this sentiment, describing the remarks as a “pretty egregious error in judgment.”

In response to the criticism, Albanese issued a statement on July 6, saying he “unequivocally apologizes” for his comments. In an ironic twist, Henderson remarked on social media that a single-line apology was insufficient.

Both Minogue and Birchmore are Australian, while Kidman holds citizenship in both Australia and the United States. So far, Minogue has not publicly commented on the situation.
