Prince Harry Reflects on His Royal Role Amid Hollywood Ventures
Prince Harry has reportedly “re-embraced” his royal identity to secure a Hollywood contract, as noted by a royal expert. During his keynote speech at the InterEdge Summit, he shared insights with former Australian politician Brendan Nelson about his decision to step back from royal duties after the passing of his mother, Princess Diana.
Harry expressed, “I thought, ‘I don’t like this job. I don’t like this role. Wherever this goes, I don’t like it.’ It claimed my mother’s life, and I was very much against it.” He added that for years, he avoided confronting these feelings.
He went on to ponder how someone in his position might best use their platform to effect change. “Ultimately, I realized, ‘Wait a minute, if there was another person in this position, how would that person best leverage this platform, this ability, and the resources that come with it to make a difference in the world?'” he stated.
On the same day, Prince Harry and his wife, Meghan Markle, visited Swinburne University of Technology in Australia, emphasizing discussions around mental health and social media. Markle mentioned her experiences of being “bullied and attacked” online for ten years, declaring herself “the most trolled person in the world.”
Harry highlighted the negative impact of social media on mental well-being, describing it as a source of “great isolation for so many.” He revealed feeling better after engaging in therapy, stating, “I literally went into the fetal position and waited until I was much older, lying on the kitchen floor, and thinking, ‘Okay, maybe this is the therapy, maybe I should try this.'”
Royal expert Helena Chard indicated that after the death of Princess Diana in 1997, a young Harry wished to distance himself from royal life. She pointed out that maintaining his royal title was essential for his Hollywood endeavors. “In Hollywood, his currency was a royal title,” Chard noted, emphasizing that Harry’s media ventures depend on his connection to the royal family.
Yet, Prince Harry has been clear about not returning to royal duties. He reportedly accepted his royal status again only as a means to continue his media projects. Chard stressed, “He traded palace oversight for Hollywood oversight, but no institutional protection.”
Ian Pelham Turner, another royal expert, contended that Harry’s candidness regarding his feelings sets him apart from other royals. He noted the similarities between Harry and his late mother, Princess Diana, in their emotional openness, which he also attributes to the influence of Prince Philip, Harry’s grandfather.
Turner recalled Harry’s evident anxiety about media attention from his teenage years, remarking that he often wished he could escape the constant scrutiny as a royal. He noted that the pressure felt overwhelming, especially after his mother’s death.
Amanda Matta, another commentator, reflected on the deep sense of failure Harry feels from the royal institution. “He seems to see the system as having failed him personally,” she said. She added, “Since stepping back from royal duties, he has consistently positioned himself as someone redefining his purpose beyond his royal origins.”
Matta also supported Markle’s claims about the relentless online harassment, noting it has persisted since their public life began together. However, some criticism arose regarding Markle’s approach to discussing her experience, as Chard argued that such statements can perpetuate drama and mistrust.
