Pritzker says it is ‘natural’ for Harris to adapt immigration policies over time

Illinois Gov. J.B. Pritzker (D) said it was “natural” that Vice President Harris would change immigration policy over time.

Pritzker appeared on CNN's “State of the Union” on Sunday after Harris campaigned in Arizona, visiting the U.S.-Mexico border and calling for stronger border security. Anchor Jake Tapper asked the governor why Harris reversed her previous position on immigration reform.

“Of course, it's natural to adjust policy to the moment,” Pritzker said.

He noted that global immigration has begun to “significantly increase” in the past four years since Harris first ran for president.

Pritzker said Harris was committed to supporting the bipartisan immigration bill that was finalized in the Senate earlier this year, which former President Donald Trump called a “failure.”

“Under Joe Biden, we finally got Sen. Lankford and a total of 75 senators to support a border security bill, but do you know who pushed it? Donald Trump.” Pritzker said. “So we needed to focus on the fact that Kamala Harris is actually trying to solve a problem.”

Pritzker noted that Chicago, where he lives, has seen an influx of immigrants in recent years. The Democratic governor said he was “working behind the scenes” and introduced legislation earlier this year as Republicans sought to criticize the Biden administration over delays on immigration reform.
