Pritzker states he will take action if Trump sends the National Guard to Chicago.

Illinois Governor JB Pritzker expressed concerns about President Donald Trump’s suggestion to send National Guard troops to Chicago amid rising crime. Pritzker stated that such a move would be “unbearable” for the state. In a post on X, he highlighted that, unlike Trump, his administration honors commitments.

This exchange is part of an ongoing spat between Pritzker and Trump as the federal government deliberates over troop deployment in Chicago.

Trump described Pritzker as “incompetent” and suggested that the city’s mayor should also seek assistance with its crime issues.

Pritzker had previously remarked that there was no criminal emergency in Chicago. He accused Trump of attempting to politicize the National Guard and divert attention from the struggles faced by working families. He reaffirmed his commitment to prioritizing the safety of Illinois residents and stated that there was no justification for federal troops on the streets.

Pritzker labeled Trump’s potential deployment of troops as “unconstitutional” and “un-American.” He criticized Trump for using troops to exert control over American cities, which he argued, would deepen divisions within communities.

Meanwhile, Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson, also a Democrat, reported a decrease in violent crime in the city last year, noting significant drops in various crime metrics. However, other statistics from the Chicago Police show overall crime rates have increased since 2021.

Johnson warned that deploying the National Guard without proper coordination could jeopardize trust between the police and the local community, which is essential for public safety.

He asserted that resisting oppressive governance ultimately leads to victory for the people. Other political figures in Illinois have voiced their disapproval of Trump’s proposal to send troops to Chicago.

In response to Pritzker and Johnson, Trump claimed they were failing in their duties to the city. He pointed to a deadly weekend in Chicago, commenting on violence statistics and implying that Pritzker was mismanaging crime in the city.

This situation follows a push by Trump to increase the presence of federal law enforcement in Washington, D.C., with officials and National Guard troops deployed to address crime concerns in that area.
