During a segment on CNN’s “Inside Politics” Monday, Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker (D) addressed the Trump administration’s mention of Nazi Germany. He remarked, “I was discussing Germany in the 1930s, when a constitutional republic was formed. The fact that it fell apart in just 53 days is something we need to be cautious about here.” He asserted, “Much of what I said has turned out to be true, and our democratic institutions are under threat from the Republican Party and Donald Trump.”
Pritzker noted an increase in violence aimed at both Republicans and Democrats in recent years. “For the last eight to 12 years, we’ve seen this rise,” he explained.
“It’s important to remember that Donald Trump and the Republican Party have called for political violence,” he continued. “From the start, Trump suggested that attendees at his rallies should hit demonstrators. He even talked about executing General Mark Milley. We see calls for jailing political adversaries. It’s unfortunate that this president can so easily slip into that mindset. I think it’s crucial for all of us to step back and bring some peace to our political discourse. We really need to have a conversation about this and consider which party should lead after November.”
Host Manu Raju then inquired, “Some critics might reference your comments from last year’s State of the Union, where you likened the Trump administration to the Nazi rise. What’s your response?”
Pritzker replied, “Well, Manu, it’s important to remember that I was discussing how a constitutional republic collapsed in 53 days in 1930s Germany, and we should be vigilant about that here. That’s the main point I was making. Also, that speech took place in February 2016. A lot of what I mentioned last year now seems accurate, especially regarding how our democratic institutions are being attacked by the Republican Party and Trump.”
