Pro-abortion ballot initiatives backed by at least half of Republicans in Arizona, Nevada

At least half of Republican voters in Arizona and Nevada say they would support a referendum protecting abortion rights in November, according to two Fox News polls released Wednesday.

50% of Republicans Arizona54 percent of Republicans Nevada According to a poll conducted Aug. 23-26, 2024, most state residents said they would vote in favor of a constitutional amendment in their state to “establish a right to abortion until the viability of the fetus or when necessary to protect the patient's health.”

These efforts have broad support across demographic groups in both key battleground states.

Overall, 73% of Arizona voters say they support the proposed statewide amendment, including 95% of Democrats and 76% of independents. The amendment is supported by 96% of self-described liberals, 81% of self-described “moderates,” and 52% of self-described “conservatives.”

The only group in Arizona where support for the proposition falls below 50% are white evangelicals, with 49% backing the amendment. Even among those who “strongly disapprove” of President Biden, 51% support the proposal.

A similar trend is evident in Nevada.

Overall, 75 percent of Nevada voters support the ballot initiative, including 95 percent of Democrats and 76 percent of independents. Nearly all liberal voters (96 percent) support the initiative, as do 81 percent of moderates and 57 percent of conservatives.

A majority of white evangelical voters in Nevada (58%) support the effort, as do 54% of voters who “strongly disapprove” of Biden.

The poll comes as Democrats expect the abortion issue to remain a top issue for voters, who say they trust Democrats more than Republicans on the issue.

Since Roe v. Wade was overturned in 2022, 22 Republican-led states have anti-abortion laws that ban or restrict abortion access beyond standards that have stood for nearly half a century. In several states, citizen activists are working to put the issue on the ballot, allowing residents to vote directly on the issue during general elections.

The Arizona poll included 1,014 registered voters. The Nevada poll included 1,026 registered voters. Both have a margin of error of 3 points.
