Pro-Immigration Supporters Criticize Trump’s DHS for Proposing $1,000 and Free Flights for Self-Deportation

Immigration advocates are criticizing President Donald Trump’s offer of $1,000 and a free airline ticket to illegal immigrants, urging them to decline the proposal.

“Utilizing this option could potentially be more detrimental for those who accept it,” argued Aaron Reichlin, an advocate with the Immigration Council. “For some, immigration courts could lead to deportation orders. Others might risk foregoing a clearer chance to remain in the country.”

Returning to their home countries with financial aid could create significant economic ripples, leading to better wages and more investments in local workplaces for Americans. Additionally, this shift may foster a richer diversity within communities, which can lead to decreased crime rates, fewer traffic incidents, and less competition for local resources. It might also trigger increased engagement from local leaders, educators, and employers.

Deputy Director Stephen Miller, who advises the Department of Homeland Security, noted the potential savings could amount to as much as $1 million per family of illegal immigrants. He tweeted this on May 5th.

Reichlin-Melnick further proposed that immigrants should effectively pay for their exit, rather than the government investing more resources to forcibly remove them, which raises serious questions regarding legal authority and funding sources.

Senator Reuben Gallego (D-AZ) suggested that illegal immigrants could exist in a low-status position, which permits them to work for affluent supporters while not affording them the same legal and social treatment as American citizens.

“Why not have them pay a $5,000 fine, undergo background checks, and receive a work visa for several years?”

David Beer from the Investor-Funded Investor Immigration Institute remarked that the federal government shouldn’t promote immigration departures after years of facilitating increased immigration under former President Biden’s administration.

Interestingly, immigration advocates didn’t raise similar objections when Biden’s administration redirected more than a billion dollars designated by Congress for border wall construction.

Regarding legal frameworks, Reichlin-Melnick conceded that the most relevant legal authority here might be 8 USC §1260, which permits the use of funds for deporting “aliens in pain,” who are considered for removal.

The Trump administration has addressed the program, which is intended to give illegal immigrants a chance of returning if they leave through legal pathways.
