Portland’s Controversial Protest
Portland seems to be stuck in its ways, doesn’t it? During the “America Comeback Tour,” Riley Gaines, a women’s rights advocate, faced off against protesters at Portland State University. She was joined by Charlie Kirk, a co-founder of Turning Point USA.
The opposition came from a radical pro-Gaza group, students advocating for Palestinian rights. According to the Portland Police Department, at least five individuals were arrested near the Memorial Student Union after 8 PM local time. An incident was captured on video by journalist Andy Ngo, showing a protester trying to force their way into the building hosting Gaines.
This protest featured young democratic socialists affiliated with various local groups. In the lead-up to Monday’s event, they targeted Gaines through social media, criticizing Portland State for hosting her. They claimed, “Demand PSU stops promoting transhate!! Turning Point USA is known for promoting transphobic, conservative hatred. Former swimmer and anti-trans speaker Riley Gaines has been invited to speak on campus.”
It’s a curious situation. One wonders how these young activists will feel in a few years, looking back on this part of their lives. Life has a way of bringing new perspectives, doesn’t it?
