Progress is being made in the retrieval of Italian divers who died in an underwater cave in the Maldives.

The search for the remaining body of an Italian diver who tragically passed away in a deep underwater cave in the Maldives is ongoing. Authorities are facing significant challenges during this recovery mission, which they have described as “extremely difficult.”

Five Italian divers went missing while diving near Alimasaa, a site located in Vaavu Atoll. Unfortunately, it has been confirmed that all five have died. Recovery efforts have so far retrieved three bodies—two on Tuesday and one previously. The other two bodies are still in the cave but have yet to be recovered.

Mohamed Hussein Sharif, a spokesperson for the Maldivian President, emphasized the dangers of the operation due to the cave’s depth and strong underwater currents. He explained, “Firstly, because of the depth. Secondly, there are strong currents in that particular channel, and down in the cave, visibility can be almost zero.”

While it was noted that the cave had previously been explored by foreign and local divers, the exact area where the Italian team submerged was not known to authorities. Despite having proper permits, some divers may not have been officially listed on the expedition paperwork.

The bodies were located at approximately 200 feet deep—twice the legal limit for recreational diving in this region. Sharif mentioned that at least two of the deceased divers were not part of the submitted expedition list.

Maldivian authorities indicated that a Finnish team supporting the recovery found the victims’ bodies relatively close to one another within the cave. The group included experts like Monica Montefalcone, a professor of ecology, her daughter Giorgia Sonmacar, aquatic biologist Federico Gualtieri, researcher Muriel Odenino, and diving instructor Gianluca Benedetti.

Authorities were alerted after the divers failed to surface by noon on Thursday amid stormy weather conditions. Although the cause of their deaths is still under investigation, the divers were considered experienced and well-versed in underwater exploration.

Montefalcone’s husband expressed disbelief, stating that his wife would never intentionally endanger anyone’s life. He suggested that something unexpected must have taken place.
