Officials in Maryland Concerned Over Trump’s Action on Homelessness

In Montgomery County, Maryland, officials are expressing frustration regarding President Donald Trump’s recent measures aimed at addressing homelessness and crime in Washington, D.C.

County Executive Mark Elrich, a Democrat, indicated that it’s not a matter of if more homeless individuals will seek shelter in Maryland, but rather when. In a video posted on X, he stood in front of a homeless camp in D.C. and noted that the National Guard had already cleared out “at least 70” similar sites. This leaves many homeless people facing a choice: utilize available shelters, addiction treatment, or medical services, or face the possibility of incarceration.

Elrich told WJLA, an ABC affiliate, that the alternatives provided to the homeless could lead to “dangerous ripple effects” within the DMV area. An associated spokesperson added that the county’s largest shelter has reached capacity, and food programs and drop-in centers are dwindling. They also track the daily influx of homeless individuals arriving from the capital.

County officials conveyed to local news outlets their commitment to doing everything possible but stressed that federal financial support is needed to alleviate the situation.

Amid the ongoing challenges, Earl Stoddard, chief administrative officer of Montgomery County, mentioned the idea of “voting with their feet” as a response to the crisis in D.C. He discussed the possibility of people leaving the district for places like Montgomery County or Northern Virginia.

Christine Hong, the county’s director focused on homelessness prevention, reflected on the uncertainty surrounding federal government plans and their potential impact.

In reaction to a rise in violent crime in D.C., Trump sent the National Guard to the area through executive orders aimed at declaring a crime emergency.

The D.C. Police Union endorsed Trump’s approach on the matter, and even reports from CNN affirmed that his efforts to combat crime and homelessness have contributed to a cleaner environment at Union Station.

Montgomery County is known for its strong Democratic leanings, having supported Kamala Harris in the previous election by a significant margin. Additionally, it ranks among the wealthiest counties in the U.S. with a median household income of about $129,000, which exceeds the national median by over 1.5 times.

The Montgomery County Public Information Office did not provide immediate comments in response to inquiries.
