Democratic frustrations regarding President Donald Trump’s recent actions in Venezuela have escalated, with some more progressive members now advocating for impeachment. This came after the U.S. orchestrated a strike in Caracas, resulting in the detention of Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro and his spouse.
Representative Delia Ramirez, a member of the House “squad,” expressed on X that many Americans are feeling a sense of déjà vu. She argued that, under the pretense of promoting freedom, a war-driven regime misrepresents its motives to justify military intervention, thus leading to illegal and perpetual wars that exploit resources and wealth.
She also emphasized the need to support Representative Ilhan Omar’s War Powers Resolution, which seeks to reinforce Congressional authority, and push for Trump’s impeachment.
Ramirez was alluding to a resolution by Ilhan Omar intended to restrict military action against Venezuela without Congressional approval. Likewise, Representative Dan Goldman criticized Trump for sidestepping Congress concerning what he termed a “war” and asserted that lawmakers deserve a clearer explanation regarding the operation.
Goldman characterized this situation as a breach of the U.S. Constitution, which could warrant impeachment. He implored his Republican peers to unite with Democrats in holding Trump accountable for this significant violation.
Additionally, Representative April McClain Delaney refrained from naming Trump but made clear on X that acting against another nation without Congressional war declaration is an impeachable offense. She pointed out that whether or not to pursue impeachment should be a tactical discussion within their group.
In California, gubernatorial candidate and Representative Eric Swalwell remained non-committal about supporting impeachment when posed with the question at a press interview, according to local media.
Progressives interested in electoral positions also voiced their opinions. For example, Kat Abu-Ghazaleh, who is competing for an open seat in Illinois, insisted that Congress must utilize its powers to halt the conflict and impeach what she termed a “war criminal president.”
The White House has been asked for a comment regarding these developments.
As for different perspectives on the operation, reactions have been starkly divided along party lines. Democrats have accused Trump of instigating an unlawful invasion of a sovereign state, while Republicans have defended the action as a successful mission to remove a dictator considered an enemy of the U.S. and its interests in the region. Leading Republicans insisted that the operation was a necessary law enforcement endeavor rather than military action, meaning there was no obligation to inform Congress ahead of time.
