Progressive leader says Schumer faces ‘uphill’ climb to win back Democrats’ trust

The co-founder of a major progressive group says Senate minority leader Chuck Schumer faces a difficult challenge to regain Democrats' trust after his controversial support last week of a Republican-raised federal fundraising bill that avoided government shutdowns.

The move by Schumer, a longtime New York lawmaker and a top Senate Democrat, has infuriated many people not only on the left, but also across the party who hopes that Democratic leaders will take a tougher position to resist President Donald Trump's agenda.

“Can he regain the trust of those who do not have a faith in democratic leadership?” asked Adam Green, co-founder of the Progressive Change Campaign Committee (PCCC), a leading grassroots organization that promotes economic populism and democracy through election and advocacy.

Green responded to his own question in a digital interview with Fox News, “The answer is yes, but it's uphill.”

Schumer last week informed Senate Democrats would fight back against the GOP's partisan fundraising bill. But a day later, he reluctantly supported the measure, saying he would help the GOP provide the Democrats' votes needed to boost the bill to pass the Senate.

Democrats were attacked by Schumer for “betrayal” of siding with Trump

In an interview with ABC News on Tuesday, “The View,” Schumer said, “I knew it was a difficult choice,” but added, “I felt I had to make it.” He then argued that partial government shutdown would allow Trump to “devastate” “as if we hadn't seen it.”

Despite the intense backlash from his own party, Schumer told “CBS Morning” several hours ago that he is still “the Senate's best leader.”

“We have a lot of good people,” Schumer said. “But I'm the best at winning a Senate seat.”

However, Green said many people with PCCC membership disagreeing with whom many say the group stands at around one million.

By Tuesday afternoon, there were nearly 22,000 responses, with 84% saying “no.”

Democrats' favorable ratings will be lower and record low

Green refers to a national poll from NBC News and CNN released last weekend. This shows Democrats' favor is sinking to record lows, and “emphasising that people who now call Democrat leaders lack much faith.

Another major democratic group, which was an indivisible, leader of Trump's resistance, called on Saturday for Schumer to step down as leader.

The PCCC isn't going too far, but Green accused him of “people who call themselves Democrat leaders are not in a position to assure them curtains for the strategy, especially if the strategy is cave. They are not reliable.”

“It was one of the things Chuck Schumer really was wrong and he would think he would admit he was wrong,” Green said.

The PCCC was one of the groups that organized protests at three stops on Schumer's plan tour this week. The event was suddenly postponed Monday morning due to “security concerns.”

Asked about his group's efforts, Green said, “This is the time to lead the rage of the masses that are not hidden from it.”
