Protests Erupt at Brooklyn Hospital Amid ICE Scuffle
A group of around 100 protesters clashed with police outside Wyckoff Heights Medical Center in Bushwick, Brooklyn, on Saturday night. The incident escalated after rumors circulated that federal immigration agents had brought a detainee to the hospital for medical treatment, leading to chaos captured in videos and resulting in nine arrests, according to police.
The demonstrators gathered outside the hospital after hearing that ICE agents were reportedly nearby. They seemed intent on preventing the agents from removing the individual in custody from the facility. Videos showed a tumultuous scene as protesters shouted and blocked the streets.
The NYPD arrived around 10:25 p.m. to manage a crowd obstructing traffic, including emergency access to the hospital. Officers initially requested that protesters disperse and stay on the sidewalks, but tensions quickly escalated, leading to a standoff that lasted several hours.
Footage shared on social media reflected the disorder, with protesters yelling at police and trash scattered across the area. At one point, a minor confrontation escalated into a larger brawl, with both police and demonstrators struggling with one another.
The situation intensified when ICE agents left the hospital with the detainee around 2 a.m. Sunday. Reports indicated that the detainee used pepper spray against the crowd as he sped off in an SUV, even striking someone during his exit.
By 2:45 a.m., the police managed to disperse both the protesters and their own officers. The nine individuals arrested faced charges including resisting arrest and obstruction of public administration.
Some witnesses claimed to have seen the NYPD cooperating with ICE, despite New York City’s sanctuary city policies designed to limit such collaborations. In some instances, witnesses reported seeing NYPD assisting ICE agents with vehicle repairs, though the police stated their role was to maintain order and that they did not cooperate with ICE operations.
