Protests break out in China as Trump’s high tariffs take effect: ‘Very worried’

Protests among factory workers in China are intensifying as the impacts of President Trump’s tariffs on imports take hold, stirring unrest throughout the nation.

Workers are increasingly voicing their frustrations on the streets due to unjust layoffs and factory closures exacerbated by wage delays and U.S. tariffs.

Leaders in Chinese industry are expressing significant concern over their current responsibilities, with many advising factories and suppliers to halt or postpone production, as reported by the head of an industry association representing over 2,000 merchants.

A 26-year-old worker from a toy factory in Zhijiang, which primarily exports to the U.S., shared his struggles, noting that employees have recently faced two weeks of unpaid leave due to these tariffs.

Goldman Sachs has predicted that the 145% tariff imposed by President Trump could jeopardize approximately 16 million jobs across multiple sectors in China.

Ji Feng, an activist based in Beijing and a former student leader from the Tiananmen Square protests in 1989, has commented on the rise of protests in the country in the wake of the COVID pandemic, highlighting the ongoing economic challenges.
