Protests over rising inflation and currency collapse escalate in Iran, causing multiple fatalities.

Protests have erupted across Iran, reportedly leading to multiple fatalities as the nation grapples with a collapsing currency and soaring inflation rates. Newsweek indicates that at least six individuals were killed on Thursday during clashes between demonstrators and security forces, driven by an inflation rate exceeding 40% and the currency’s decline.

These demonstrations, which have now entered their fifth consecutive day, mark the largest protests in three years, with casualties reported in cities such as Lordegan, Kuhdasht, and Isfahan. Footage from Lordegan shows large gatherings of people, paired with the sound of gunfire. Local human rights organizations claim that security forces shot and killed two protesters during these confrontations.

According to reports, the protests have spread to over 50 cities, highlighting the strain on the regime’s security forces, who seem unable to manage the situation effectively. Interestingly, the government’s response appears somewhat relaxed this time, with media coverage of the protests allowed and state broadcasters seemingly sympathetic to the protesters’ grievances, which contrasts sharply with previous harsh crackdowns.

President Masoud Pezeshkian has publicly recognized the government’s accountability for the discontent, stating, “If people are dissatisfied, we are to blame—not America or anyone else.” He added that the issues stem from “poor management.”

One shopper from the suburb of Karaj expressed frustration with the current leadership, saying, “Khamenei has spent over four decades chasing war, missiles and chanting, ‘Death to this or that.’ Now, we can’t even afford rice.”

Meanwhile, American officials have shown support for the protesters, encouraging them to stand against Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei. In a recent social media post, U.S. Ambassador to the U.N. Mike Waltz emphasized that “the people of Iran want freedom,” condemning the regime for the economic struggles faced by citizens.

As these protests unfold, they occur amid heightened tensions, with President Trump recently warning against Iran’s potential attempts to rebuild its nuclear capabilities. He indicated a strong willingness to act if such developments are confirmed, suggesting severe consequences for Iran if they proceed with these plans.

The situation is rapidly evolving, with reports indicating widespread disruptions as businesses, universities, and government offices close across numerous provinces due to the protests.
