Providence City Council Distributes “Know Your Rights” Mailers
In a proactive move, the Providence City Council in Rhode Island has decided to distribute mailers titled “Know Your Rights.” This initiative aims to guide residents on how to interact with law enforcement, particularly in the context of immigration enforcement under the current administration.
These cards, which will be sent to households, will include information about constitutional rights, available in both English and Spanish, specifically when residents encounter agents from the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).
Residents are advised not to open their doors unless the officers present a valid warrant signed by a judge. There’s even a portion of the card that can be cut out and kept in wallets to show immigration enforcement officials if necessary.
Rachel Miller, a council member, stated, “Providence City Council is partnering with organizations representing our diverse communities to promote safety and inclusion amid the fear and uncertainty affecting our city’s immigrant communities due to the administration’s policies.” She emphasized the long-standing role of immigration in the city’s history, asserting, “Immigrants are welcome here. We encourage all members of our community to educate themselves on their rights and where to seek help.”
The council collaborated with over a dozen local immigrant rights and advocacy groups to produce these mailers, which cost around $17,000, according to a spokesperson. This effort seems to respond to the federal government’s tactics regarding illegal immigration operations that target individuals residing in the country.
In recent times, there has been visible tension, as exemplified by riots in Los Angeles in response to ICE operations that led to the arrests of multiple undocumented immigrants, some with criminal backgrounds.
