Putin Suggests Ukraine War Might Not Have Happened Under Trump

Russian President Vladimir Putin indicated that he believes the war in Ukraine could have been avoided if Donald Trump had won the presidency after the 2020 election.

After a meeting with Trump, Putin shared his thoughts with reporters, suggesting that the invasion of Ukraine wouldn’t have occurred if Biden hadn’t taken office. He reflected on his past discussions with the previous U.S. administration, emphasizing his attempt to persuade them that the situation was precarious.

“I want to remind you that in 2022, during my last contact with the previous administration, I tried to convince you that the situation should not be revived,” he stated. “It’s a significant mistake today when President Trump suggested there wouldn’t be a war if he were president.”

Putin also expressed regret that U.S.-Russia relations have reached a low point since the Cold War, commenting that there hasn’t been a strong connection between the two nations in recent years.

“It doesn’t benefit our country or the world,” Putin added, noting that the focus should shift from conflict to dialogue.

Additionally, he praised Trump for his initiative to understand the roots of the conflict, calling this desire “valuable.” Putin expressed hope that Trump’s new approach to global diplomacy could foster mutually beneficial relationships, even under challenging circumstances.
