Trump Announces Joint Missile Manufacturing with Ukraine
During a NATO summit held in Turkey, President Donald Trump revealed that the United States will allow Ukraine to produce Patriot interceptor missiles.
In a meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy on July 8, Trump confirmed that Ukraine would receive rights to manufacture these crucial missile systems. This move comes as negotiations for a peace agreement between Ukraine and Russia continue.
“Little Birdie taught me this. It’s about the fact that we give them the right to make the Patriots. We teach them how to do it. It’s actually very complicated,” Trump stated.
“One of the things we’re going to talk about is we’re going to give you the license to make ‘Patriots,’ and that’s pretty cool, right?” he added. “I haven’t told the company yet, but I’m sure it will work out. I’m sure they’ll be happy.”
Throughout the ongoing conflict, Ukraine has relied on the Patriot Missile Defense System for aerial defense, depending on the U.S. for supplies until now.
“The Patriot system is the best in the world at the moment. It’s the best anti-ballistic system,” Zelenskiy remarked.
Lockheed Martin is the primary contractor for the Patriot System’s interceptor missiles. These missiles employ “hit-to-kill technology,” designed to neutralize incoming threats and safeguard ground forces and essential infrastructure from tactical ballistic missiles, cruise missiles, and enemy aircraft.
“This is a defensive weapon, and I prefer that to an offensive weapon,” Trump noted.
While Trump didn’t specify when the production licenses might be issued, he expressed optimism about Ukraine’s capabilities, stating he believes “they can produce it fairly quickly.”
