Rachael Leigh Cook Shares That ‘Caught By Love’ Finished Filming Two Weeks Before The Louvre Heist: “I Can’t Believe the Similarities”

Rachael Leigh Cook Stars in Hallmark’s Captured by Love

Rachael Leigh Cook, a familiar face in romantic comedies, returns to the Hallmark Channel with her latest film, Captured by Love, which intriguingly coincides with a recent high-profile international heist.

Note: Mild spoilers follow

Cook, famed for her breakout role in 1999’s She’s All That, isn’t new to Hallmark. Over the past decade, she’s featured in more than ten films, including one that appeared in Netflix’s Top 10 this week. In Captured by Love, she plays Annie Collins, who embarks on a trip to a Maltese wellness resort with her friend, Joanna.

At the resort, Annie has a charming encounter with Jake, portrayed by Luke MacFarlane, leading to a romantic fall, quite literally. Cook notes this scene reminded her of her memorable transformation from She’s All That.

“Wearing a red dress and facing a handsome guy definitely draws comparisons,” she said. “While the situations are different, the feelings were similar—the excitement was overwhelming.”

As it turns out, Jake is not just another guest; he’s a private investigator tipped off about a necklace stolen from the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Some have drawn parallels between this plot and a real-life robbery at the Louvre that occurred shortly after filming. Cook shared that they wrapped the movie just two weeks before the incident, leading to an interesting coincidence.

In a discussion with DECIDER, she reflected on filming in beautiful Malta and expressed her optimism about the future of romantic comedies. She eagerly talked about her chemistry with MacFarlane, describing him as charming and very much the ‘James Bond’ type.

When asked about her character’s introduction, where Annie makes quite an impression, she likened it to a fall she took in She’s All That. “It’s funny because I’m not the one who usually navigates that scenario gracefully,” she mentioned, laughing. “It’s definitely a challenge, and I admire those who can handle it effortlessly.”

Addressing another playful detail, Cook highlighted a book that drops during her introduction, titled Dressage Detective: Foal Play. While it was meant to hint at her character’s adventurous spirit, she claimed that any deeper connections to the story were purely coincidental.

Discussing her co-stars, she emphasized how every cast member brought something special. While she couldn’t pick favorites without giving spoilers, she felt that the ensemble brought a lot to the movie, enriching the story despite limited screen time.

Cook shared insights into the rock climbing scenes, revealing some unexpected challenges during filming. With safety concerns about the rocky set, she admitted it made her nervous. “It was not your typical climbing scenario, and I relied on my wonderful co-stars to keep things safe,” she said with a chuckle.

As her career has unfolded, Cook noted the evolving landscape of romantic comedies, singling out the impact of technology. “With phones in the mix, romance has changed, but I think people are in need of these stories now more than ever,” she remarked. “The genre has its own ecosystem, and it feels like there’s a renewed interest in love stories.”

Reflecting on her career, she expressed pride in being part of Sisterhood Co., Ltd., which recently made the Netflix Top 10. As both a star and producer, she is thrilled that the movie has resonated with such a wide audience.
