Michael Che, a star from Saturday Night Live, shared his thoughts on the current Democratic government shutdown and the halt of food stamp benefits. Instead of criticizing the Democratic Party directly, he focused his ire on “racists.”
On his Instagram account titled “Che Thinks,” Che expressed his frustration with “racists” who target Americans relying on welfare.
“This SNAP freeze is totally messed up. I keep seeing these racist videos that shame (mostly black) families struggling to buy groceries,” Che said.
He went on to criticize those discussing the SNAP situation in derogatory terms.
“There’s this strange notion that if some people need welfare, then no one should be allowed to have it, right?” he pondered, accusing America of unjust practices.
“This nation thrives on greedy individuals who exploit the system for personal gain. Yet, when marginalized communities try to make the most of their situation, they’re scrutinized much more harshly—especially black individuals,” he noted.
“I know, we’re all here to bicker and make noise on social media. We keep our promises that way. But the left? They draw a line when it comes to aiding the poor,” he asserted with a sense of urgency.
Che wrapped up his message by stating that, in reality, black people feel more shame than pride in using food stamps.
“I grew up on government cheese and powdered milk, waiting for my friends to leave the store so they wouldn’t see me paying with stamps. Trust me, it’s not as glamorous as it sounds,” he reflected.
Of course, the government shutdown and the suspension of SNAP benefits could be attributed to the Democrats, who have consistently blocked the passage of a straightforward budget free from special interests.
President Trump has stated that he does not wish to suspend SNAP services.
On Friday, Trump indicated that he has instructed government lawyers to seek legal advice on how to ensure SNAP payments can continue amid the ongoing shutdown. The program is facing potential funding delays, and Democrats have declined to back a clean spending bill.
Trump noted: “Government lawyers are uncertain about our legal authority to access the specific funds needed for SNAP, and now two courts have issued conflicting rulings on the matter.” He expressed, “We don’t want Americans to go hungry simply because radical Democrats refuse to act and reopen the government.”
